Synopsis

Principal Liu learned that the school's top student Tao was sentenced to death. He visited Tao in prison and heard his story. Tao and his wife wanted to serve society but Tao was forced to resign when he opposed the ship company manager who disregarded safety of passengers. Disparaged and deceived by others, he ended up doing heavy manual work. Meanwhile, his wife was harassed by her manager and she could no longer work. Their dreams of serving society were shattered. To save his seriously ill wife, Tao was forced to steal from the foreman and was caught and convicted. The film exposes the darkness of society, portrays the sorrow, resistance and struggle of righteous intellectuals, and makes a strong criticism against society.
