Albert Capellani’s four-part adaptation of Victor Hugo’s most famous novel, Les Misérables (1912), is an exceptional work. Published in 1862 and later serialized in newspapers, the novel - which is also a scathing social critique - was an unprecedented popular success. It was particularly popular among workers. This vast social and historical epic offers a highly detailed portrait of life in early 19th-century France. Through the lens of the fate of the convict Jean Valjean, Hugo analyzes human nature and denounces the plight of the poorest. The political and popular appeal of this text gave rise to numerous adaptations.
The restoration by the Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation was carried out in 2022 using an original tinted and toned nitrate print preserved in its collections. 4K restoration work was conducted at the L’Image Retrouvée laboratory, with support from the CNC.
