Le Coupable is an adaptation of the book of the same name by François Coppée. A lawyer with an impeccable career defends a young man accused of murder. During his closing argument, to everyone’s great surprise, he reveals that he is the defendant’s father, whom he abandoned before the boy was born.

4K restoration completed in 2020 at L’Image Retrouvée by the Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé Foundation and the Cinémathèque Française, based on the original negative deposited by Pathé at the Cinémathèque. The intertitles were reconstructed based on a period copy of Georges Denola’s *Le Geste* (1917) from the CNC’s collections, as well as using Antoine’s screenplay preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and François Coppée’s novel.
