Synopsis

This movie, adapted from Zhang Le-ping's comic, tells the story of the hardships experienced by the orphan San Mao. San Mao was an orphan in old Shanghai.Without a home or family to call his own, he had to feed on trash and sleep in the garbage truck, struggling to get by. One day, he found a wallet and, out of kindness, returned it to the owner, only to be falsely accused of theft. He was also pressured by a gangster to do bad deeds, but when he realized the situation he was in, he staunchly refused to be morally corrupted. Later, he was adopted by a wealthy woman, but he was unwilling to live an idle life, so he chose to roam around until the liberation of China, when he eventually put an end to his wandering and was able to live a regular life.
