Qishi'er jia fangke / Those 72 Tenants / 七十二家房客(2K)()

Drama 1963 China 80'

Synopsis

In Guangzhou before liberation, a dilapidated building housed seventy-two poor families. The owner, Binggen, and his wife were desperate to make a fortune by turning the building into a "pleasure palace." They sought help from a corrupt police officer to drive out the tenants, but their scheme was thwarted. The tenants banded together, and their solidarity proved too strong for Binggen and his wife. In another desperate attempt to secure power and influence, Binggen offered his adopted daughter, Ah Xiang, to the local police chief as a concubine. However, Ah Xiang managed to escape and found refuge with the tenants who had come to sympathize with her plight. The film portrays the working-class people's resilience and commitment to fairness, revealing how they stood up to the ruthless tactics of the privileged few. Their strength in unity led to Binggen's downfall and Ah Xiang's rescue, emphasizing the importance of community and solidarity in the face of oppression.
