Two Stage Sisters
Synopsis
Chunhua, a young woman, fled from an arranged marriage and sought refuge in Xing's Yue opera troupe. She soon became good friends with Yuehong, Xing's daughter, and was considered an essential member of the troupe. However, their happy days came to an end when Yuehong was harassed by local ruffians and arrested, leading to Chunhua's own arrest and public humiliation for her brave rescue attempt. Tragically, Xing was also persecuted to death, and the troupe disbanded. Chunhua and Yuehong went to Shanghai and sold themselves to pay for Xing’s burial. Chunhua then organized the Sisters' Troupe, dedicated to performing progressive plays. But their success was threatened by Tang, the manager, who demanded that they perform reactionary plays. Despite Chunhua's refusal, Yuehong became corrupted and was used by Tang. Tang ordered someone to blind Chunhua and ruin their performance, but she uncovered his sinister plot. After China’s liberation, Chunhua and Yuehong reconciled and worked together once more. This film serves as a poignant reminder of the persecution that artists faced under the old society and dark forces.
