Synopsis
On the Loess Plateau of Northern Shaanxi, Gu Qing, a cultural worker of the Eighth Route Army who collected folk songs, was invited to a traditional wedding of Cui Qiao.The young girl, good at singing, was about to be forced into the early marriage. During Gu’s stay, he shared stories of new ways of life in Yan’an and women's greater marital freedom there, which left a profound impact on Cui Qiao. When it was time for Gu Qing to leave, Cui Qiao expressed her desire to follow him, but he needed permission from his superiors. To convey her longing for the Communist Party and a brighter future, Cui Qiao serenaded Gu Qing up the hill with her sweet voice. However, her impending marriage loomed in April, leading her to flee her wedding and cross the Yellow River in the dead of night. Gu Qing rushed to the riverbank but found solace in the peaceful flow of the Yellow River, a symbol of the unrelenting nature of life.
