Synopsis

During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Lingyu joined the Salvation Drama Team organized by the Shanghai Film and Drama Circle and fell in love with the musician Gaolibin. The troupe spread anti-Japanese sentiment and encouraged the military and civilians to unite and fight against Japan, but the corruption of the Kuomintang-ruled area caused people to suffer from hunger and cold, and some unscrupulous people took advantage of the nation’s situation to make a fortune. After the victory of the War of Resistance, Lingyu and Libin, poor as they were, persisted in working for a living. Libin got lung disease when Lingyu was pregnant. Eventually, while writing an article exposing the crimes of those who made a fortune out of national disaster, she gave birth prematurely and life became even more difficult. Lingyu and Libin, who actively resisted during the war, found themselves in poverty after the victory, while those war profiteers lived in comfort. The film vividly portrays the corruption of Kuomintang rule.
