Synopsis

The protagonist of "Laugh, Clown, Laugh" is a happy-go-lucky father with a passion for the Chinese art of crosstalk. In wartime Tianjin, he led his family through the difficult years and maintained the joy of life. Under the pressure of everyday life, he clandestinely began to work as an actor of comedic plays, which triggered disdain from certain members of society and objection from his family. Thanks to his explanation, his wife and daughter finally agreed to let him make a living from comedy performance. The movie as a whole reflects the traditional Chinese philosophy of staying positive in life.
