Over the last decade, a number of filmmakers with distinctive personal styles have come to the fore in the Japanese cinema, with Miyake Sho as a salient figure. The director’s two latest features, “And Your Bird Can Sing” (2018) as well as “Small, Slow but Steady” (2022) were much talked about in the global film community. His earlier works such as “Nagahama” (2016) and “August 8” (2016) gave full play to the expressiveness of the characters through their body language, a focus that continued in “Small, Slow but Steady”.
