Supported by the China Film Archive, the Chinese Embassy in Guyana officially launched the Chinese Film Festival at MovieTowne in Georgetown, the country’s capital on June 22nd local time. More than 140 people attended the opening ceremony, including officials from Guyana’s Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ministry of Education, and Investment Bureau of Guyana, as well as sinophiles from all walks of life, such as delegates of private sectors and young students, together with representatives of Chinese diplomatic missions to Guyana and Chinese-funded institutions and overseas Chinese.
Mr. Charles S. Ramson, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport of Guyana praised the great success of bilateral relations on the basis of mutual trust and understanding. He said Guyana would continuue to strengthen cooperation with China to deliver greater benefits to the two peoples.
In her opening speech, Guo Haiyan, Chinese Ambassador to Guyana hailed the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties as an important milestone in China-Guyana relations of which people-to-people exchange constitutes a key part. The two peoples are both builders and beneficiaries of this friendship. The Chinese Film Festival is expected to deepen mutual understanding and recognition between the Chinese and the Guyanese. China stands ready to pursue a variety of cultural and sports exchanges with Guyana, thus carrying forward the friendship between the two countries.
Following the opening ceremony, the audience watched the opeing film The Wandering Earth. The festival, set to last for five days, is free to the public. More films, including Nice View, Vanguard, White Snake, and Hi Mom will be screened in the coming days.
